New Chapter Boundaries for City of Lakes MATHCOUNTS Competitions

Oct 24, 2024

The Minnesota MATHCOUNTS chapter boundaries are getting a makeover in the City of Lakes chapter. Updated to enhance the experience for students, coaches, and volunteers, beginning with the 2025 season the City of Lakes Chapter will move to two competitions – City of Lakes North and City of Lakes South.

Updated chapter maps are below.

Moving from three chapter competitions to two—City of Lakes North and City of Lakes South—means a more streamlined experience for all.

City of Lakes South will continue to be hosted at the University of Minnesota, and City of Lakes North will set up in the northern Minneapolis suburbs.

Our volunteer coordinators will reach out to coaches in early January with final competition details.

The decision to move from three competitions allows for more concentrated resources, ensuring each chapter competition meets the needs of participating students, coaches, and volunteers.

“Our volunteer leaders for our chapter programs have taken a look at current participating schools, and our intent to serve MATHCOUNTS students and coaches across the whole state. By moving to two competitions in City of Lakes versus the previous three, we look forward to being able to put the right resources into providing a solid experience for all MATHCOUNTS schools across the state. One of the top things we hear from students year-after-year is how much it matters to meet other kids growing in their math skills, from other schools. We look forward to expanding on this in our City of Lakes Chapters,” said Katie Jamieson, Minnesota MATHCOUNTS Executive Director.

One of the standout aspects of MATHCOUNTS is the sense of community it fosters among young mathematicians. Meeting peers from different schools, sharing in interactive STEM activities, meeting volunteer engineers, and engaging in friendly competition are all part of what makes MATHCOUNTS special. The new chapter boundaries aim to bolster this experience by bringing more schools together under each chapter, enhancing the opportunities for interaction and teamwork.

The Minnesota State MATHCOUNTS board has analyzed the effect of this change on chapter to state competition advancement, and we are please to share plans at this time include continuing our wild card competition which will continue to invite a similar number of total students to the state competition. Coaches will receive additional information via email about the wild card competition closer to chapter competition dates next winter.

Coaches are encouraged to review the new chapter maps and verify which competition their school should attend. If you have questions please reach out to Katie Jamieson: katie@mathcountsmn.org.
