MN MATHCOUNTS Offers Rapid Stress Recovery Training for Parents, Coaches, and Volunteers at State MATHCOUNTS

Apr 27, 2026

Rapid Stress Recovery is a 5-minute tool that families across Minnesota can implement daily

How a breakthrough stress recovery technique found its way to the MATHCOUNTS State Competition — and why every parent, teacher, and student in Minnesota can benefit from it.

When 125 of Minnesota’s brightest middle schoolers gathered for the MATHCOUNTS State Competition in March, they did so having already won at the local level. They are, by every measure, exceptional young people. And like every exceptional young person — like every parent, coach, and teacher who loves them — they carry stress.

This year, alongside the Sprint and Target rounds, something different was offered in a conference room at the hotel: a 90-minute session on Rapid Stress Recovery, a research-backed, five-minute daily technique known as Target 2 Zero developed by Licensed Professional Counselor Scarlett Williams.

For the coaches, parents, and supporters who attended, many described it as one of the most unexpectedly practical things they had ever learned.

The session was led in person by Natasha Walter-Fisk, MACP, LMFT, LPC, LPCC, a Minnesota-based licensed therapist, with Scarlett Williams joining live via Zoom from Blacksburg, Virginia.

The audience was exactly the kind you would find at a state-level academic competition: educators, engineers, and parents from communities across Minnesota.

The format was straightforward: a brief presentation on the neuroscience of stress and why Rapid Stress Recovery (RSR) works so quickly, followed by a live demonstration where participants actually did the technique themselves.

No personal sharing was required. No therapy. No vulnerability exercises.

Just a concrete, testable tool that anyone in the room could take home and use that same afternoon.

That accessibility — the fact that RSR can be learned in a single session and used independently forever after — is central to its design.

What Is Rapid Stress Recovery? Rapid Stress Recovery (RSR) is a preventative stress management technique developed by Scarlett Williams through her company, Scarlett Williams, LLC.

It draws on EMDR therapy, working memory research, movement, and somatic neuroscience to clear accumulated stress from the nervous system — in under five minutes.

The key word is preventative. RSR is not a treatment for crisis — it is a daily practice, like brushing your teeth, that prevents stress from accumulating into something harder to resolve.

Williams often describes it as a reset button for the nervous system: used consistently at the end of a school day, a work shift, or a stressful event, it stops the biological buildup that leads to the 20 symptoms commonly attributed to stressful events including anxiety, hypervigilance, burnout, and sleep problems.

And it works across the entire lifespan. From elementary school children to older adults processing grief and life transitions, the technique adapts to where you are. The science behind it is the same regardless of age; the application scales with the person.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • 1,000+ people trained, including 300+ first responders and military personnel
  • Six IRB-approved research studies
  • 98.7% effectiveness rate documented during active combat deployment
  • 84% reduction in PTSD symptoms when used as a clinical treatment
  • Zero dissociation or adverse reactions reported across all studies

Why This Matters for Parents

One of the most compelling questions of the MATHCOUNTS session was on how to guide a child through RSR at home. Luckily, this is an additional training in which parents can learn. RSR is gentle, non-invasive, and highly effective for children and adolescents. It requires no special equipment, no prior mental health training, and can be used immediately –  after a hard competition, a social conflict at school, a frightening event, or simply a day that felt too heavy.

“I used it with my daughter two hours after the training ended. She went from having the worst moment ever to giggling through it — and now often requests to do ‘the silly thing’ when she’s too hard on herself.” — Mental Health Professional and Mom, Target 2 Zero training participant

Williams has trained over 1,000 people in RSR, and parents consistently report that learning the technique reshapes how they respond to their children’s emotional distress. Instead of feeling helpless in the face of a child’s overwhelm, they have something concrete and effective to offer.

Why This Matters for Teachers

Teachers at the MATHCOUNTS competition represent some of the most dedicated educators in Minnesota – coaches who give evenings, weekends, and enormous personal energy to support their students. They also absorb, day-after-day, the emotional weight of classrooms full of young people navigating academic pressure, social difficulty, and the ordinary turbulence of growing up.

Burnout among educators is not a personal failing. It is the predictable result of accumulating stress without an adequate tool to clear it. RSR was developed in part precisely for this population. Used at the end of a school day, it takes less than two minutes and creates a clean break between the demands of work and the rest of life. One middle school teacher who participated in RSR training put it plainly: “This works so well that we are seeking funding to train the entire student body.”

A Resource for All of Minnesota

Target 2 Zero’s Minnesota presence is anchored by Target 2 Zero-trained Natasha Walter-Fisk, who serves clients across the state, including in California, Colorado, and internationally.

Target 2 Zero RSR training provided via Scarlett Williams, LLC and is available both in person and online, making it accessible to families in rural Minnesota just as easily as those in the Twin Cities metro.

Scarlett Williams LLC is also available to deliver RSR training to school staff, parent groups, and community organizations across Minnesota. For schools that have adopted social-emotional learning programs, RSR offers something those programs often lack: a fast, concrete, immediately usable skill that students and staff can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

A Different Kind of Competition Season

High-stakes academic competition is exhilarating for the students who thrive in it — and quietly grueling for some who don’t. The pressure to perform, the fear of disappointing people who believe in you, the experience of working hard and still coming up short: these are real stressors, and they leave a mark if nothing is done to address them.

What Target 2 Zero offered at the MATHCOUNTS State Competition was not therapy, and it was not a lecture about self-care.

It is a practical skill.

Something a parent can use in the car on the drive home. Something a coach can offer a student before the next round. Something a teacher can practice at the end of a long Friday and actually feel the difference. That is what preventative mental health looks like when it works: quiet, fast, effective, and available to anyone who learns it.
