Mathletes from 15 schools turned out for the South Capitol Chapter Competition on February xx. The event featured the Candy Countdown Round – rewarding mathletes who called out answers first during the live-action section of the competition – with candy. Since mathletes remain at their competition tables during the Countdown Round – everyone at the table benefited from a correct answer. The Countdown Round included bonus questions, as well. And the first mathlete to answer a bonus question correctly won a Davannis pizza card. Long-time MATHCOUNTS volunteer Steve Strauss provided the cards – and looked almost as happy giving out the cards as the winners did when they received them.
Two teams from the South Capitol Chapter advanced to the State Competition, the Lake Middle School team coached by Guor-Huar-Lu and the St. Paul Academy & Summit School team, coached by Jenny Borovsky. Andy Xie, from Lake Middle School, qualified for state as an individual.
