Long-time Minnesota MATHCOUNTS volunteer, Steve Hartley, passed away in December. Steve was one of the ‘back stage’ crew, making aging computers work, testing equipment before the State Competition Countdown Round, and ‘doing what needed to be done’. We miss him and his helpful presence.
“Steve was a steadfast presence, consistently jumping in to take care of what needed to be done to make the season happen, and carrying years of continuity and institutional knowledge among volunteers. He was also instrumental in implementing the wild card contest, that paves the way for additional students to be invited to the state competition each year. Minnesota MATHCOUNTS would not be what it is today without Steve Hartley. Throughout his years with cancer, Steve was sometimes able to continue joining competitions in person, and in the years he could not, he continued volunteering behind the scenes. We are so grateful for Steve’s contributions to MATHCOUNTS over the years, and will miss him greatly.”
