May 15, 2024

Congratulations to the 2024 Minnesota National MATHCOUNTS Team!

Team Minnesota took fourth place competing against 56 other teams in the National MATHCOUNTS Competition in Washington, D.C., May 13.

Coach Jack Failor, from Rochester’s Kellogg Middle School, said, “I am very proud of the team effort and this shows that Minnesota can compete with the best mathematicians across the country. We also won the Most Improved State Award and were recognized during the Countdown Round.

“And, competing as an individual Eric Ding took 5th place in a field of 226 competitors in the written round. Congratulations to Minnesota MATHCOUNTS.”

Team Minnesota’s members were the highest scoring participants in the Minnesota MATHCOUNTS State Competition in March.

Team members and their schools are:

Andreas Walexon, Minnetonka Middle School West; Eric Ding, Rochester Kellogg Middle School; Sam Wu, Minnetonka Middle School East, and Jeff Zhou, Wayzata East Middle School.

For over forty years, Minnesota MATHCOUNTS has been the state’s premier Middle School math enrichment program and its lead sponsor is the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers (MnSPE). MnSPE and its volunteer members coordinate MATHCOUNTS programming across the state. More than 200 teacher-coaches make MATHCOUNTS work in over 150 schools statewide.
