MATHCOUNTS® is a national non-profit organization that strives to engage middle school students of all ability and interest levels in fun, challenging math programs, in order to expand their academic and professional opportunities. They get as excited about math as their peers do about sports!

Since 1983, Minnesota MATHCOUNTS has impacted thousands of students. In the 2013-14 school year alone, some 1,200 students participated through their schools.

What coaches and our former students have to say

MATHCOUNTS made math accessible to all levels, and in an engaging way. It impacted my students’ awareness of what can be ‘called’ math. Students didn’t realize how much math is involved in things they see on a game show, or ads and logos. It was a great way to open their eyes to the math in the world around us.

One of my math team students was one of the four Minnesota students on the national team. He came up to me, smiling, the first night, and told me that he got to meet and visit with a friend with whom he had corresponded for many years online. They never met face-to-face, only conversing through message boards on a popular math website. I beamed with happiness and pride—not just happy that he finally got to meet a peer whom he has greatly admired for years, but also proud to see how much he had grown socially in the three years I coached him.”

I was on the Minnesota MATHCOUNTS team at nationals in 1993 and 1994. While the competition was fun and learning new (and difficult!) math was interesting, the best part of the experience was the people. Encouraged by my MATHCOUNTS experience, in high school I threw myself into a large number of academic competitions and had some of the best times of my life with teammates at local, state, and national competitions.

There is another benefit — the recognition MATHCOUNTS gives to academic achievers, countering the trend that “it is not cool to be smart in school.

Make a contribution to this valuable program today, using the Give MN box on the right

By contributing to Minnesota MATHCOUNTS, you are helping build a better future for participating students and for society at large: Solid math skills are essential for engineering, computer science, medicine, or any number of professions.

With most high schools not requiring four years of math, it is extremely important students develop an interest in math in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Otherwise, it is likely they will take only the minimum courses required in high school and be unprepared or uninterested to pursue math in college.
