Pelican Rapids and Discovery Middle School Teams Advance to State Competition
On February 2, the temperature in Moorhead got all the way up to 1 below zero – but that was outside. Inside, 40 mathletes from northwestern Minnesota were sweating as they counted and calculated their way through the 2022 MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition.
Teams and individuals from Discovery Middle School in Alexandria, Park Christian School in Moorhead, Pelican Rapids High School, Battle Lake School and Horizon Middle School East in Moorhead were battling for a chance to go to the MATHCOUNTS State Competition in Plymouth, March 11-12.
As the last pieces of scratch paper made their way to the recycling bin, the results were announced. Teams from Discovery Middle School, coached by Denise Murken, and Pelican Rapids High School, coached by Lisa Petznick, will advance to State. Lars Dahl, a Discovery student competing as an individual will also advance to State. Alex Rodriquez, also from Discovery, qualified as an individual and a team member.
