MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition Important Information
Planning for the 2022 Minnesota MATHCOUNTS competition season is almost complete. And MATHCOUNTS Director Katie Jamieson says it will be “…a hybrid season so that as many kids as possible can safely participate.”
Team and individual practices are underway in schools across the state. And when the chapter competitions begin, coaches and mathletes will see a few changes.
This year, mathletes who want to advance to state and national competitions MUST participate in the National Online Chapter Competition on Feb. 17. The online chapter competition is an individual competition. There is no team option in the online competition.
But, Jamieson added, coaches can give their mathletes a chance to take part in a traditional chapter competition, with both individual and team events. They’ll find that chance in Minnesota’s bonus Chapter Competitions (which may also help more students qualify for state). The dates and locations are listed below.
The bonus competitions will be in-person competitions that take place between February 1-12. The bonus competitions will precede the online event. The questions used for the in-person bonus competitions in early February will be provided by National MATHCOUNTS. They will NOT be the same questions that will be used in the national online competition.
Jamieson explained that students who want to qualify for state and national competitions must participate in the online national Chapter competition.
Nine of our 12 Chapters were able to secure accessible locations for their competitions. Coaches whose schools are in the Traverse des Sioux (Mankato and surrounding area) and Southeast Chapters (Rochester and surrounding area), may select a chapter competition to attend. Additionally, our City of Lakes chapter (Minneapolis and suburbs) will be offering two locations instead of the normal three. Schools in City of Lakes should choose one of the two options.
If coaches decide to participate in an in-person chapter competition, you MUST register for a Chapter Competition Location. Please register for the competition in your Chapter unless yours is not holding its own competition.
All registered coaches will receive a direct link to register. This must be completed by January 7. One registration form per school should be submitted. Schools participating in the online competition ONLY should also fill out the form, indicating this option.
Jamieson noted that there is one more chance to ensure the safety of all MATHCOUNTS participants and coaches: masks will be required for everyone who attends the in-person Chapter competitions.
We look forward to welcoming you to the 2022 season and are so glad to bring kids back together who love to tackle math challenges with others who share their passion. We are excited to do exactly that this year in Minnesota!
The MATHCOUNTS board is grateful to the teachers, coaches, parents, volunteers and sponsors who make Minnesota MATHCOUNTS available to kids across our state.”
