By contributing to Minnesota MATHCOUNTS, you are helping to build a better future, not just for the students who participate in the program, but for society at large.
The educational foundation these students acquire will pay dividends tomorrow. Solid math skills are essential in our ever-increasingly technical society. Reports shows that American
students are lagging behind their counterparts in other countries. China is now graduating more engineers than the U.S., for example.
Whether it be engineering, computer science, medicine, or any number of professions, math skills are critical.
With most high schools not requiring four years of math, it is extremely important students develop an interest in math during middle school years. Otherwise, it is likely they will take only the minimum courses required in high school and be unprepared or uninterested to pursue math in college.
It’s a simple equation — if you can’t keep them interested in math, you can’t improve their skills.
There is another benefit — the recognition MATHCOUNTS gives to academic achievers, countering the trend that “it is not cool to be smart in school.”
Since 1983, Minnesota MATHCOUNTS has helped thousands of students fulfill their potential or — perhaps even more important — discover their potential. Year after year, the program sends students on their way with the motivation of recognition and a solid base of math skills. Please join us in this important effort.
